     3Hindi-Urdu director and scenarist born in 
     4Peshawar (now Pakistan). Entered film in 1933 
     5at East India Film, Calcutta: then joined Sagar 
     6(1934) where he met Mehboob, who later 
     7produced his Awaaz. Played the lead in 
     8Mehboob's Manmohan as well as writing the 
     9script and the lyrics. Also scripted Mehboob's 
     10Bahen (1941) and was also a noted scenarist 
     11and writer at Ranjit. Sarhadi's cinema drew 
     12inspiration from and gave sustenance to the 
     13IPTA style of film-making. Although himself an 
     14unaffiliated Marxist, Humlog, Footpath and 
     15Awaaz were very influential when the IPTA's 
     16film efforts were at their peak between the end 
     17of WW2 and Independence. Migated to 
     18Pakistan after Independence, remaining there 
     19except for a brief period in the mid-70s. Apart 
     20from his own films, other writing credits 
     21inlclude Jagirdar, Kal Ki Baal (both 1937), 
     22jeevanSaathi 0939), Sajani(1940), Garib 
     23(1942),Badi Maa (1945),Elaan (1947), 
     24Anokha Pyar(1948), Dil Ki Duniya (1949) and 
     25Khel (1950); also wrote the dialogue for Baiju 
     26Bawra (1952).
