• Damodar Hari Chaphekar assassinates Charles Rand, the ‘Plague Commissioner’, and Ayres, the district magistrate, for their handling of plague relief measures; he is hanged with his two brothers in 1898. A Marathi film 22 June 1897 about this incident was made in 1979 by Jayoo Patwardhan and Nachiket Patwardhan
