     1'''Uttam Kumar (1926-80)'''
     2
     3
4Bengali superstar who at times was the
     5Tollygunge-based Bengali film industry. Real
6name: Arun Kumar Chatterjee. Employed as a
7clerk in the port commissioner’s office,
8Calcutta, before joining films. Briefly stage
9actor at the Star Theatre (e.g. in Shyamali,
101953, filmed in 1956). Début as extra in
     11uncompleted Mayadore. Broke with the
12prevailing theatrical acting styles and achieved
13stardom with Nirmal Dey’s Sharey Chuattar,
14which also initiated his famed co-starring films
15with Suchitra Sen: they featured in some of
     16the most spectacular Bengali melodramas
17made by Naresh Mitra, Sushil Majumdar,
18Ajoy Kar and the Agradoot and Agragami
19units, epitomising the genre of the soft-focus
     20musical romance (with Hemanta Mukherjee
21as his regular playback voice). Melodramas of
22suffering, betrayal and the struggle for truth (cf.
     23Sagarika, Saptapadi) made an embattled
     24literary tradition (with a bhadralok middle-class
25identity and an apolitical humanist philosophy)
26popular again after a long history of radical
27attacks on the Bengali novel. In e.g. Kartick
28Chattopadhyay’s Saheb Bibi Golam and in
29the Ajoy Kar and Tapan Sinha films, the Uttam
     30Kumar persona abandoned many conservative
31tenets of this tradition while receiving an
32unprecedented degree of mass adulation. S.
33Ray presented his version of the phenomenon
34in Nayak, which many saw as the star’s
35autobiography. The two also worked together
     36in Chidiakhana. His biographer
37Gourangaprasad Ghosh claimed that when his
38effort to go ‘national’ with the Hindi film
39Chotisi Mulaqat proved a failure, he finally
40turned into an actor of mass-produced
41romances. Except for Amanush, his Hindi
42films were mostly unsuccessful. His last film,
43Ogo Bodhu Sundari, a version of My Fair
44Lady, was completed with another actor. Wrote
     45his autobiography (1979).
