     4Malayalam director born in Engandiyur, Trichur 
     5Dist., Kerala, into a farming family. Started 
     6writing poetry and prose as a teenager for the 
     7weekly Mathrubhoomi. Assisted Vimal Kumar 
     8and P.R.S. Pillai on Thiramala (1953). First 
     9film, Neelakuyil (co-d with P. Bhaskaran), 
     10started independent cinema in Kerala. Member 
     11of the CPI. Early work is in context of the broad 
     12cultural renaissance spearheaded by the Kerala 
     13Peoples’ Arts Club (see IPTA), indebted to the 
     1440s CPI-led uprising against Travancore State. 
     15Several major writers entered film through 
     16Kariat, e.g. Thakazhy Shivashankar Pillai 
     17(author of Chemmeen), Uroob (who scripted 
     18Neelakuyil), playwrights Thoppil Bhasi, K.T. 
     19Mohammed and S.L. Puram Sadanandan. 
     20Opened up new areas in Malayalam film with 
     21work strongly imbued with lyrical, even 
     22mystical feelings about a newly discovered 
     23sense of community through subjects often 
     24placed among fisherfolk and villagers. Briefly a 
     25Kerala MP. Finished shooting the Telugu film 
     26Kondagali before his death, but it remained 
     27unedited. His Chemmeen was later re-released 
     28in a Hindi-dubbed version called Chemmeen 
     29Lahren (1980). Acted in Bhaskaran’s Rarichan 
     30Enna Pauran (1956). Also produced M. 
     31Lakshmanan’s Tamil film Kannamma (1972).
