  • Rajesh Khanna

    v1 v1
     1'''Rajesh Khanna, (b. 1942)'''
     2
     3
4Originally Jatin Khanna. The first of the late
     560s/early 70s Hindi superstars with a big
6impact on the industry, later equalled only by
7Bachchan. His late 60s roles were often lowbudget
     8genre films (e.g. Yash Chopra’s thriller
9Ittefaq). Broke through in two popular love
     10stories made and released simultaneously:
11Aradhana and Do Raaste, which shaped his
12film persona, later elaborated by Shakti
13Samanta. His image is traceable to Gulshan
14Nanda’s novelettes generated in the context of
15the industrialisation of 60s Hindi publishing
     16pioneered by Mitra Prakashan’s best-selling
     17journal, Manohar Kahaniyan, in Allahabad,
18and its numerous imitations aiming serials at
19less-educated readers. In the 70s, he often
20played a social orphan (Hathi Mere Saathi)
21deprived of maternal love and stricken by
22some existential malaise (Amar Prem) driving
23him to depravity (Dushman, Kati Patang)
24from which the heroine and foster-mother
25rescue him, usually by naming him as their
     26protector. Often partnered by Sharmila
27Tagore or Mumtaz in his best-known films. His
28image of the innocent in a big bad world
29extended also to famous roles as a man who
30laughs to cover up some internal tragedy
     31(Anand, Andaz). This approach influenced
32film-makers like Yash Chopra, but it was
33quickly overtaken in the mid-70s by Bachchan,
34making Khanna’s style an anachronism in the
3580s. Stood for election as a Congress (I)
36candidate in Delhi, almost defeating the rightwing
     37BJP leader, L.K. Advani. In a by-election
38he defeated the film star Shatrughan Sinha
39(who now represented the BJP) and became an
     40MP.
