     4Pioneer cineaste of South India born in Vellore. 
     5Initially in the cycle business (1906), then the 
     6car trade (1911). Apprenticed in 1912 to a Mr 
     7Stewart, the official cinematographer of Lord 
     8Curzon’s 1903 durbar. Set up India Film in 
     9Madras (1915) with a second-hand Williamson 
     10camera and finance from businessman S.M. 
     11Dharmalingam. The studio was set up in a 
     12makeshift space on Miller’s Road where he 
     13made Keechaka Vadham, intertitled in Tamil, 
     14Hindi and English. Reputed to have made an 
     15earlier film, Gopal Krishna. Draupadi 
     16Vastrapaharanam featured an Anglo-Indian 
     17actress, Violet Berry, as Draupadi. Made his 
     18other features, all mythologicals, around his 
     19home town of Vellore. In 1923, his studio burnt 
     20down and his son died, prompting him to 
     21retire.
