     4Assamese actor and director. One of the most 
     5enigmatic figures in Assamese film. Stage 
     6enthusiast, footballer, bohemian, actor, 
     7playwright and film-maker. Worked initially as 
     8a trader with his comrade-in-arms Bishnu 
     9Rabha; then became a stage actor and achieved 
     10a major reputation in the 30s. Became a key 
     11member ofJyotiprasad Agarwala's Tezpur- 
     12based film unit in the 30s, playing the cruel 
     13Gaathi in Agarwala's]oymati, and also acted 
     14in his second film, Indramalati. Continued 
     15working in the touring theatre groups of 
     16Assam, including an adaptation of Gogol's The 
     17Government Inspector, and in the original plays 
     18Kiya, Ko/abazar. etc. Together with Agarwala 
     19and Bhupen Hazarika, he was a key figure in 
     20the provincial committees of the Assamese 
     21IPTA (1946). Adapted Siraj, a plea for Hindu Muslim 
     22unity, from a story by Lakhidar Sarma, 
     23filming it in 1948 apparently co-directed by 
     24Bishnu Rabha and with Hazarika debuting as 
     25composer) and staging it in 1962 After 1963, 
     26known mainly as film actor following a 
     27tremendously successful comic performance in 
     28Brojen Barna's Ita Sito Bohuta.
