     18Duhai. She returned to Lahore after Partition, 
     19acting in e.g. Imtiaz Ali Taj’s Gulenar and 
     20Shaukat Hussain’s Laila, both scored by 
     21Ghulam Haider; she also produced 
     22Chanway. Known as the Melody Queen, 
     23almost all her Bombay films were hits with 
     24extremely popular music, and she remained a 
     25leading playback singer in Pakistan, notably in 
     26Punjabi productions. Best remembered for her 
     27songs Awaaz de and Jawan hai mohabbat in 
     28Mehboob’s Anmol Ghadi and for Yahan 
     29badala wafa ka in Jugnu. As a singer, she is 
     30often considered Lata Mangeshkar’s 
     31predecessor. Recorded two parts of the 
     32musical series ‘Taranum’ in the 1980s/90s in
