     4Hindi director born in Karachi. Graduated in 
     5Ahmedabad (1919) and went on European 
     6study tour. Joined Irani’s Majestic (1923). Later 
     7worked at Orient Pics where he made one of 
     8the most discussed quality films of the silent 
     9era, Balidan, adapted from Tagore. Went on 
     10Jayshree Gadkar in Patlachi Soon (1966) 
     11film, imaged repeatedly as innocent and tearful 
     12daughter-in-law in some of the longest and 
     13most sentimental Marathi socials/melodramas 
     14(e.g. Bhalji Pendharkar’s Mohityanchi 
     15Manjula). Early work strongly influenced by 
     16Hansa Wadkar who played her foster-mother 
     17in her first major hit, Sangtye Aika. Played 
     18Tamasha dancing-girl in several Anant Mane 
     19and Dinkar D. Patil rural melodramas in the 
     2060s, when Dhirubhai Desai and Babubhai 
     21Mistri also cast her in Hindi mythologicals. 
     22Now associated with roles opposite stunt star 
     23Dara Singh in Chandrakant films (Har Har 
     24Mahadev, Kisan Aur Bhagwan). Published 
     25autobiography in 1986.
