     5Tripura. Law graduate from Calcutta University 
     6but became a major stage star, starting at 
     7Minerva Theatre (1922) with Chandragupta; 
     8joined Star Theatre with Karnarjun (1923). 
     9Acted in several plays for different companies, 
     10mostly playing villains. Entered film to 
     11complete Andhare Alo, begun by Sisir 
     12Bhaduri. Then actor-director, first at the Taj 
     13Mahal company, later at East India Film and 
     14Priyanath Ganguly’s Kali Films. Style 
     15dominated by Calcutta Theatres conventions 
     16in themes commonly drawn from plays/novels 
     17based on Rabindranath Tagore (e.g. Nauka 
     18Dubi and Gora), Saratchandra Chattopadhyay 
     19(Devdas), Anuroopa Devi and on his own 
     20stage hits (e.g. Mahanisha, Banglar Meye, 
     21Pather Sathi etc). Later films starring Uttam 
     22Kumar (e.g. Bou Thakuranir Haat, 
     23Annapurnar Mandir) provide rare examples 
     24of a 30s stage style continued into post- 
     25Independence Bengali film. Acted in several 
     26films, such as those by younger Kallol 
     27directors like Sailajananda Mukherjee (e.g. 
     28Shahar Theke Dooray, Roy Choudhury). 
     29Towards the end of his life, was most closely 
     30associated with the folk Jatra.
