    v1 v1
     1'''Nagerkoyil Sudalaimuthu Krishnan (1905-57)'''
     2
3Legendary Tamil film comedian, stage actor
4and political activist. Born in Nagerkoyil, in
5former Travancore. Joined the TKS Brothers
6drama troupe aged 17, replacing the comedian
7and film star M.R. Swaminathan (seen in e.g.
     81000 Thalaivangi Apoorva Chintamani, 1947).
9Was already a noted stage star when débuting
10in the TKS Brothers production of Raja
11Sandow’s Menaka. Early films with Sandow
     12(Vasantsena, Chandrakantha) where he met
     13his wife and long-term comedy partner T.A.
14Mathuram (1918-1974). Played the lead role in
     15Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum, establishing
16his distinctive brand of comedy. Classic screen
     17image developed Kattiyankaran folk theatre
     18conventions with a separate sub-plot and
19spoken dialect as opposed to the high-flown
     20Elangovan-type language (e.g. playing
     21fishermen with T.S. Dorairaj in Shakuntalai;
22Mudhal Thedi). In this style, the comedian
23can address the audience directly and allude to
24topical events (e.g. his funny song in
25Paithiakaran, referring to his jail sentence; his
26lines in the costumed period movie Amarakavi
27referring to a recent visit to the USSR). The style
28is enhanced by the comic but politically
29strident lyrics of Udumalai Narayana Kavi,
     30written specially for Krishnan (e.g.
     31Nallathambi). Initially a Marxist sympathiser
32and a friend of Pa. Jeevanandan (whom he
33sheltered when the CP was banned), Krishnan
34became first a nationalist and then a DMK
     35supporter, producing C.N. Annadurai’s DMK
36Film Nallathambi, directing Panam and acting
37in the Karunanidhi-scripted Raja Rani and
     38Rangoon Radha. Together with M.K.
     39Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, he was convicted
     40of murdering the gossip columnist
     41Lakshmikantan although he proclaimed his
42innocence all his life. His wife started the
43N.S.K. Nataka (aka Eneskay Nataka Sabha)
44staging plays mainly directed by and featuring
     45the star S.V. Sahasranamam. Their best-known
     46play is P. Neelakantan’s nationalistic Nam
47Iruvar, later filmed (1947) by the AVM Studio.
48The company débuted in film production with
     49Paithiakaran; their best-known productions
     50are Nallathambi and the Krishnan-directed
51Manamagal and Panam. Panam, a major
52DMK film, featured the Parasakthi (1952)
53combination of writer Karunanidhi and star
     54Ganesan while Krishnan sang a pro-DMK
55song. It also featured documentary footage of a
     56DMK Party conference. Biography by
     57Narayanan (1992).
