     4Hindi film composer born in Baghdad. Son of 
     5Rai Bahadur Chunilal, the production controller 
     6of Bombay Talkies and founder of Filmistan. 
     7Joined the army in WW2. Employed in the 
     8Lucknow station of AIR (1946) where he 
     9received his only musical education in the 
     10company of singers like Faiyaz Khan, Bade 
     11Ghulam Ali Khan and Begum Akhtar. First film: 
     12Devendra Goel’s Aankhen, where singer Lata 
     13Mangeshkar apparently refused to sing for 
     14him, considering him an untrained newcomer. 
     15However, they became close friends and his 
     16second film, J.B.H. Wadia’s Madhosh, features 
     17both Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood, the 
     18latter singer being most closely associated with 
     19his compositions. Madhosh included the hit 
     20Talat song Meri yaad mein. Wrote some of 
     21Hindi cinema’s most famous compositions, 
     22such as Geeta Dutt’s Ai dil mujhe bata de in 
     23M.V. Raman’s Bhai Bhai, Mangeshkar’s Lag ja 
     24gale and Naina barase in Woh Kaun Thi and 
     25several ghazals, like Aapki nazaron ne samjha 
     26in Mohan Kumar’s Anpadh. Was Chetan 
     27Anand’s regular composer following the 
     28popularity achieved by the songs from 
     29Haqeeqat. In the 70s worked with 
     30Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Bawarchi) and 
     31Gulzar (Koshish, Mausam). Apparently also 
     32scored the following films which remained 
     33uncensored: Jahan Mile Dharti Akash, Jahan 
     34Tum Wahan Hum, Ummeed Pe Duniya Jeete 
     35Hain, Maine To Mohabbat Ki Hai, Naya 
     36Janam Phir Wohi Shyam, Rehnuma and
