Major stage reputation with [[Sisir Bhaduri]], with whom he first appeared in 1924 in Basanta Leela (role of Basant-doot or the Herald of Spring) and Seeta (as Baitalik). Partner in Rungmahal Theatre with actor Rabindra Mohan Roy (1931-41) where he scored several plays such as Bhaduri’s Shri Shri Vishnupriya (1932). Early films include [[A.R. Kardar]]’s productions at [[East India Film]]. Worked in several Hindi films in Bombay as actor and music composer. Hit solos in Devdas, Bidyapati and [[Dhoop Chhaon]] rank as all- time favourites. Nephew is playback singer Manna Dey.
