Taking its title from the hit song Kashmir ki kali hoon main sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Kapoor’s successful Junglee (1961), this is an exotic comedy romance in colour deploying Shammi Kapoor’s established persona as the rich youth who spurns his family’s wealth and after some adventures falls in love with a woman not of his social class who cares little for his wealth. Rajib (Kapoor), constantly criticised by his mother for crazy decisions (e.g. announcing an award of Rs 500,000 to the family’s mill employees), leaves when there is talk of arranging a marriage for him and goes to Kashmir where he falls in love with a flower- girl (Tagore). Rajib lives in his family’s bungalow, sneakily rented out by the caretaker, and is regarded as weak in the head. Kapoor had put on some weight and his physical gyrations are less elegant than they were in his b&w Nasir Hussain films, but the influence of rock music, the exotic locales and the emphasis on upper-class youth culture continues from his previous films. The film includes several Mohammed Rafi hits in the Kapoor style (Kisi na kisise, Yeh chand sa roshan chehra).
