     4Major Gujarati novelist, playwright, essayist and 
     5social reformer. Worked briefly at Sagar where 
     6his scripts were a seminal generic influence on 
     7its reformist socials, esp. Dr Madhurika and 
     8Vengeance is Mine (both 1935, the latter based 
     9on his story Ver Ni Vasulat), feeding into 
     10Mehboob’s historicals. Early writings were 
     11reformist socials following in the wake of the 
     12most significant novelist in modern Gujarati, 
     13Govardhanram Tripathi (1855-1907). Became 
     14popular with historicals and period fables often 
     15set in the Solanki period (AD 961-1242): e.g. 
     16Patanant Prabhuta (1916), Gujarat No Natha 
     17(1917), Rajadhi Raja (1922). Author of the 
     18spectacularly successful historical Prithvi 
     19Vallabh (1920), filmed in the silent era by 
     20Manilal Joshi (1924) and later by Sohrab 
     21Modi (1943). In later years better known as a 
     22lawyer and politician, co-founding the rightwing 
     23Swatantra Party and briefly as a cabinet 
     24minister in the Congress.
