     4Born in Hunsur, Karnataka. Kannada and 
     5Telugu director of stage-inspired mythologicals, 
     6often starring Rajkumar. While writing 
     7Company Natak plays (e.g. Swarga 
     8Samrajya) for Bangalore-based Bharat Natak, 
     9also worked as scenarist, esp. for Vijaya 
     10Studio, remaking L.V. Prasad’s hit Pelli Chesi 
     11Choodu (1952) in Kannada as Madhuve Madi 
     12Nodu. Began as bit actor at Bombay Talkies; 
     13briefly with Bal Gandharva’s theatre troupe, 
     14then with Veeranna and Mohammed Peer’s 
     15Chandrakala Natak where, with Panthulu, he 
     16assisted Simha on Samsara Nauka (1936). 
     17Like Panthulu, from 1958 directed mid-budget 
     18morality plays. Claimed that mythological 
     19genre commanded better budgets, allowed 
     20greater emotional freedom and called for more 
     21directorial inventiveness than the socials. 
     22Helped redefine the Rajkumar persona from his 
     23earlier historicals into narratively freer near 
     24mythic fantasies ruled by destiny and the 
     25individual quest for eternal goodness. Script 
     26credits include: Hemareddy Malamma (1945; 
     27also act); Krishnaleele (1947); Jagan Mohini 
     28(1951); Nala Damayanti (1957); Bangarada 
     29Manushya (1972) and Boothayyana Maga 
     30Ayyu (1974). Also acted in Muttaide Bhagya
