     7New Theatres (1945) as laboratory assistant, 
     8then editor. First full editing assignment: 
     9Tathapi (1950). Worked as assistant director 
     10and editor for Bimal Roy; later also edited 
     11films by R. Kariat and R. Tarafdar. Renowned 
     12for introducing editing conventions basic to 
     13Hindi film: e.g. insertion of close-up as bridge 
     14between incompatible shots. Acquired 
     15reputation of being able to salvage films that 
     16went out of control during shooting (e.g. 
     17Kariat’s Chemmeen, 1965). First film as 
     18director in collaboration with Ritwik Ghatak 
     19and Salil Choudhury (Musafir). 60s films 
     20continue in the vein of Bimal Roy’s socials. 
     21Introduced ‘cancer films’ with Anand, a very 
     22popular type of melodrama with terminally ill 
     23characters, which featured the reigning 70s 
     24superstars Rajesh Khanna and Bachchan. 
     25Repeated the duo in Namak Haram. Later 
     26films often produced by N.C. Sippy are lowbudget 
     27family melodramas. Chairman of 
     28Central Board of Film Cenrtification and of the 
     29NFDC.
