     6from the Lahore group with e.g. Shyam Sundar,

     10in the 40s. Learnt music from Babu Ganeshlal, 
     11with whom he worked in theatre playing

     14in Lahore with Shorey; then worked for 
     15Pancholi starting with the Punjabi film Gul-e- 
     16Bakavali featuring Nurjehan as a child actress. 
     17Regular composer for Pancholi until Poonji. His 
     18score for Khazanchi led to a series of 
     19Pancholi hits pioneering new marketing 
     20strategies. Best-known compositions, often 
     21sung by Shamshad Begum, invoke Punjabi folk 
     22rhythms and extensively feature percussion 
     23instruments like the dholak. Moved to Bombay 
     24in 1944 where he worked in Filmistan (Chal 
     25Chal Re Naujawan) and Minerva. 
     26Composed one successful Mehboob film 
     27(Humayun) and gave Lata Mangeshkar her 
     28first big break in playback singing (Majboor, in 
     29duets with Geeta Dutt and Mukesh). Returned 
     30to Lahore after Partition, where he started 
     31Filmsaz with director S. Nazir Ajmeri and actor 
     32S. Gul, making Beqaraar. Also scored Akeli, 
     33Bheegi Palkein and the two Nurjehan films
