Elgin Talkies (Bangalore)

One of the oldest theatres in Bangalore, it was set up as a theatre for dramatic performances in 1896 the year cinema was born and started showing films in 1907. In 1932 it screened the first talkie Alam Ara and it had its last show in December 2011. The theatre, founded by Veerabhadra Mudaliar, has remained in the family for four generations now. Till 1996, when Elgin got its first renovation, the chairs inside were the very same ones that had witnessed the screening of silent films in 1930.
