'1968: Key Events
- The All-India Co-ordination Committee of Communist Revolutionaries, the precursor of the CPI(ML), becomes the focus of the extra- parliamentary Left.
- The first Indian Triennale of International Art, organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi.
- The G. D. Khosla Committee Report on Film Censorship criticises the censorship guidelines: ‘If they are followed rigidly, not a single film, Indian or Western, is likely to be certified. ’
- Abbas’s independent short, Char Shaher Ek Kahani, made in the context of the Khosla Committee’s investigations, sparks a major censorship controversy by suggesting that censorship violates the constitutional right to free speech. Major reforms are instituted by the Hidaytullah judgment in the Supreme Court.
- A manifesto for a New Indian Cinema movement is issued by Mrinal Sen and Arun Kaul, advocating a state-sponsored author- cinema.
- The state-owned Jyoti-Chitraban studio is inaugurated in Kahilipara, Guwahati, Assam.
