     3Kannada director born in Bangalore. Aged 7, 
     4acted the title role in Kuvempu’s play Nanna 
     5Gopala. Joined Gubbi Veeranna’s Gubbi

     15theatre group Benaka. Introduced folk idioms 
     16borrowed from the Yakshagana to the stage, 
     17pioneering a trend later associated with cultural 
     18indigenism. Director of the National School of 
     19Drama (1978-81), and of Repertory at Bharat 
     20Bhavan, Bhopal (1981-6). He had to leave 
     21following allegations of having tried to burn 
     22alive one of the company’s actresses. Returned 
     23to his native Karnataka where he runs the 
     24state’s repertory company, Rangayana. Most of 
     25his film-making was partnered by Karnad, 
     26except for Chomana Dudi. Scored several 
     27films, e.g. G.V. Iyer’s Hamsa Geethe (1975), 
     28Mrinal Sen’s Parashuram (1978), Ek Din 
     29Pratidin (1979) and Kharij (1982), M.S. 
     30Sathyu’s Kanneshwara Rama (1977, also act), 
     31Girish Kasaravalli’s Ghattashraddha 
     32(1977), Akramana (1980), Mooru Darigalu 
     33(1981), Tabarana Kathe (1986) and 
     34Bannada Vesha (1988), Katte Ramachandra’s 
     35Arivu (1979), the children’s film Hangama
