     1'''Adoor Gopalakrishnan''', (b. 1941)
     2
     3
4Malayalam director born in Adoor, Kerala.
5Stage début as actor aged 8. Graduated from
     6Gandhigram Rural University (1960) having
7produced over 20 plays, including ones he
8wrote himself. Notable among these was
9Godothe Kathe, adapting Beckett’s Waiting For
10Godot, with Gopi. Resigned from government
11job and graduated from the FTII (1965).
12Founder and president of the Chitralekha Film
13Co-op in Trivandrum (1965), the first of its kind
14in India, set up by FTII graduates as a
     15production-distribution centre for personal
16films outside the commercial sector. In the mid-
1770s, a laboratory was added to the Trivandrum
18studio. Writes his own scripts, two of which
     19(Elippathayam and Mukha Mukham) were
20published in English by Seagull Books in
21Calcutta (1985). Films show an emphasis on
22psychology depicted through gesture (cf. S.
23Ray). Theorised his approach in Cinemayude
24Lokam (1983). The reformist dimension of his
25work achieves an extra edge given the relative
26absence of that tradition in Travancore’s
27literature. Travancore’s delayed entry into the
     28nationalist mainstream and its sudden
29transformation from a feudal state ruled by
30Dewan C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyer into one run by
31a CPI government, created a break in Kerala’s
32history which animates his films: e.g. his
33portrayal of the Nair community of former rent
34collectors in Elippathayam and of the
     35Communist movement itself in Mukha
     36Mukham and Mathilukal.
